Smells like rotten meat, packed with antioxidants, and inedible. This is a Clathrus ruber commonly known as a lattice stinkhorn. While it contains beta-carotene and lycopene just like tomatoes, this is one mushroom you definitely want to leave alone. But its presence is actually a great sign for the surrounding trees. Fungi like this break down decaying wood, recycling vital nutrients back into the soil and keeping the local ecosystem healthy. What to Plant in August? ⁠ ⁠ August might feel like peak summer, but it’s still a great time to plant crops that thrive in warm soil and deliver harvests into the fall. Planting in-season supports soil health and ensures your garden stays productive and nutrient-rich. Here’s what to plant now—and why:⁠ ⁠ Leafy Greens 🥬: Sow quick-growing greens like arugula, spinach, and lettuce now for a fall harvest. Many will be ready in just 30–45 days and prefer the cooling temps ahead.⁠ ⁠ Root Vegetables 🥕: Carrots, beets, and radishes do well when planted in late summer.
