Smells like rotten meat, packed with antioxidants, and inedible. This is a Clathrus ruber commonly known as a lattice stinkhorn. While it contains beta-carotene and lycopene just like tomatoes, this is one mushroom you definitely want to leave alone. But its presence is actually a great sign for the surrounding trees. Fungi like this break down decaying wood, recycling vital nutrients back into the soil and keeping the local ecosystem healthy. I truly enjoyed our group tour with Dr La Puma, Kandi, and Rocky and I'm not someone who spends a lot of time on farms. (Reconsidering this now, though!) I had so many questions about fruits, medicines, and so much more which were all answered. If you get the opportunity to go definitely get some honey and check out the bees that made it. Itā€™s the best honey on this earth Iā€™m convinced. Also when the persimmons are in season itā€™s like Willy Wonkas chocolate factory where you can grab one of a branch and bite into a delectable experience of flavor. Love Dr. LaPuma's place. It's a full working farm on the residential hills Santa Barbara: Dr. LaPuma is a firm belliever in the importance of vegetable nutrition as a determiner of health. His urban farm grows a large variety of veggies and fruit and he works with other physicians calling for diets more full of healthy fruits and vegetables. He wants to be part of that movement.
